Presentation Description: World War I was a truly global war, involving people from five different continents. The British and French Empires were the largest colonial empires at the time, and they led people from all corners of the world. We see this multicultural and transnational diversity reflected in the casualties that fell in Flanders Fields: they were born in at least 116 different contemporary countries. Who were these people and how did they end up in Flanders/Belgium? How were these people commemorated later, and what was the impact of the war experience on those who survived? How can we deal with the shared history of these people in the context of commemorating the First World War?
